Within this video, there were multiple statements given by the person who was doing the report that made me uncomfortable. One of these was “who knows where he’s from”. Another one of these comments was when she said “one of those if you know what I mean”. Lastly, the third comment that really stood out to me was when the health professional said “the type of people that hang around at the park”.
Each of these statements is important to address because they insuate that the nurse not only believes that his injury is of less importance than others but also she is being a bit racist. Later on she even made a comment that she didn’t think she was racist because she “ has friends of every color”. The implications that statements like these can make are astronomical. This can create even more barriers to healthcare for people of color than they already are. Not only that, but it creates an environment for anyone I’m looking to think that this type of behavior is okay, and furthermore, precipitates and continues any prejudices already that patients are experiencing. Furthermore, this also will change the type of quality of care that patients will have throughout the day because the nurse oncoming will have a different opinion than that they could’ve had of the patient before hand. These assumptions and statements are absolutely detrimental to our healthcare today.
If I was a nurse receiving this report, I would have multiple feelings and reactions to this type of situation. I feel that I tend to be someone who often speaks my mind and doesn’t let these things slide. However, from a coworker in a healthcare standpoint, it would be tough to approach the situation, especially with someone who is supposed to be very empathetic. I honestly was very put off by this individual and felt that they created a hostile environment. Honestly, if I was the nurse receiving a report from this individual, I would not want to listen at all, and therefore could miss pertinent information on the patient’s health care and their status. With regards to how the nurse adjust these comments within the video I feel that I would be conflicted about what to do. One statement that the nurse made was that he said “what do you mean by that” this is a statement I have made before and provides clarification for all parties involved. I tend to be a more confrontational person than I used to be but I feel like I’d have a hard time approaching this in a way that would be constrictive criticism and helpful rather than make the problem worse. I really like how the nurse follows up with the patient and ask him how he wants to be addressed. This solves the problem of not knowing how to pronounce peoples names, seeing what they want to go by, etc.
On a recent clinical rotation with regards to a patient who was from out of state and had no resources. A comment was made that they are “milking the system for free everything”. I feel that this further extenuates the bias with regards to people who have immigrated here, or have low, socioeconomic status, etc. Not only was the patient already at a disadvantage for not having the resources they needed, they also had the people who are supposed to be caring for them also not on the corner of the sandbox. It was incredibly frustrating to know that the people who are supposed to be the most caring can also be the ones who further these issues in society today.
